LV Prawn Lab: documenting a backyard freshwater prawn hobby
A personal learning diary from Chiang Mai: real photographs, water-test uncertainty and the design of an honest public experiment.
Make the learning visible
LV Prawn Lab began with a backyard idea in Chiang Mai: build a small freshwater prawn setup and share what happened. The public journey follows the pool, the first bubbles, improvised hiding places and the arrival of very small prawns.
The website is part of that hobby. It gives the story a place alongside the photographs and records. This is not a commercial farm or a prawn shop. I do not sell prawns.
Keep mistakes in the story
A learning diary is more useful when the awkward parts remain visible. The published chapters describe rain affecting the pool, a temporary nursery and a first feeding that was harder to measure than expected. They record what I tried, not a proven method for someone else to copy.
The same applies to water tests. If a colour was hard to interpret or a final reading was not clear, the diary should preserve that uncertainty rather than replace it with a neat number.
Separate an observation from a conclusion
Seeing prawns swimming is an observation. It is not a census of every animal in the container. An arrival estimate, a recorded loss and a measured growth sample each describe something different.
That distinction affects the website too. An illustrated population helps visitors explore the project, but it is not a sensor feed or a verified survival result. Planned costs and paid expenses also belong in separate categories. An honest interface should make the source and limits of each number understandable.
Build a website that invites exploration
The journey gives visitors a sequence to follow, while the interactive yard and behind-the-scenes pages offer a different route into the same hobby. Photographs ground the experience in the real setup.
For the chapters and public records, visit LV Prawn Lab. The project page explains how it fits into my wider work. I am documenting a personal experiment and learning as I go, rather than presenting farming instructions or guaranteed outcomes.
