Pay-as-you-go AI: the product thinking behind Askly
How Askly uses a prepaid balance for everyday AI, and what that means for occasional use, model choice and clear spending.
Start with the task, then consider the payment model
Someone may need help improving a CV today, understanding a study topic tomorrow and drafting a customer message next week. That pattern does not necessarily resemble a monthly software habit. Askly is built around access when a task appears: add a balance and pay for completed AI services as you use them.
The useful question is not whether prepaid AI is always cheaper. It is whether the way you pay matches how regularly you use the product.
What a shared AI balance changes
A shared balance puts model access and spending in the same place. In Askly, people can use models from different providers without managing a separate subscription for each within the platform. Quick, Smart and Deep Think provide different starting points for different tasks.
Model choice still matters. A short rewrite and a complicated analysis have different needs. The interface should make that choice understandable without asking every user to become an AI specialist.
Why visible usage matters
Prepaid access only feels predictable if the balance and activity history are clear. People need to see the cost of a completed request and the balance that remains. A non-expiring balance also lets occasional users return when they have another task.
A recurring subscription can make sense for consistent, heavy use. A prepaid approach can suit intermittent needs. Comparing them means looking at your tasks and actual usage, rather than assuming one model wins for everyone.
Where AI Airtime fits
Askly is the platform; AI Airtime is its South African product. Rand top-ups make the prepaid idea familiar in that market. The aim is practical help with writing, learning, planning and creating.
This is the product direction I am working on now. For current access options and the actual service, visit Askly or AI Airtime. For the wider project context, read the Askly project page.
